EXTENSIONS
Fir Tree
The sensitive extension of a beautiful stone cottage in rural County Durham for a young family.
In extending this house, we set out to retain and reuse, in as far as reasonably practicable, the existing stonework which, over hundred years of weathering, tells the story of this building up until this moment in time.
The new, extended building fabric is finished in Siberian larch cladding to complement the stone. The result is a building that, whilst extended, shows a clear trace of the historic building outline. This juxtaposition adds a new chapter to the story of this building, bringing it into the 21st century, forming a home fit for a growing family whilst also celebrating its rich past.
Fell View
A single storey extension within the Darras Hall Estate. Sitting on an awkward and narrow plot, the scheme needed to appease both Northumberland Planning and the Darras Hall Estate Committee Bylaws. Despite having ample bedroom space, the current house lacked family and entertainment space on the ground floor as well as a poor connection to the mature garden and Northumberland fields beyond.
We elected to introduce vertical timber panels to break up the existing dwelling and garage which has had its white render refreshed. This added texture as well as giving the extension it’s own identity.
Mitford Gap
Mitford Gap is a proposal for a single storey extension within a woodland setting on the periphery of a settlement boundary of a village outside Morpeth, Northumberland.
The extensions’ orientation and position within the woodland plot is driven by the sun path, privacy and key views to the meadow beyond. The houses’ geometry and ratio of solid to glazed is driven by environmental considerations such as maximising passive solar gain [warmth from the sun] during winter months, whilst mitigating overheating in the summer months.
Highbury
This project involves the comprehensive refurbishment of a Victorian era terrace house in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Our client is a young family that enjoy cooking and entertaining at home.
The scheme includes a single storey extension that helps to create a better relationship between the cooking / dining / family spaces and the modest south facing garden.
The material palette is restrained, instilling a sense of calm.
The Surgery
Historically an old doctor’s surgery in the rural village of Corbridge, Northumberland: the current owners wanted to take advantage of additional space which existed around the side and to the rear of their property. It was the perfect opportunity to add additional living space to the front of the property. In addition to this, a new kitchen / living / dining space with larger openings was created. The glazed gable end creates a dramatic, light space perfect for entertaining whilst creating a greater connection with the garden beyond.
Copper Box
Development of a single storey extension in the heart of Gosforth, Newcastle Upon Tyne: the main focus being unusual form, contrast with the existing dwelling whilst using standing seam copper to create a relic within this historic Newcastle suburb.
Project Void
The brief of this 1/3 of an acre plot on Whinfell Road, Darras Hall was to almost double the size of this 1960s A-frame house. Paying homage to the style at the time whilst breathing new life into the plot was central to the material choice: utilising a contrast between slim profile brick of the re-clad existing building and charred timber cladding [laid both horizontally and vertically] of the new extension.
Vaulted ceilings, internal changes in height and multiple reception rooms [including a dinging, living, spa area and cinema room] all have engagement with the mature gardens both to the front and rear of the property. Upstairs, all four bedrooms now have en-suite bathrooms, with an upper floor reception room and a master suite fit for the scale of the new house as a whole.
